Water Supply

The Delta Plan Water Supply chapter provides an overview of California’s water supply, where it comes from, and how it is used. It also describes California’s water policy foundations, including federal, State of California (State), and local policies, laws, and programs, and the need for continued improvements in local water planning, management, and information. It explains the special role of the Sacramento- San Joaquin Delta (Delta) in California’s water, including its history, conflicts and challenges, and necessary investments and changes to achieve flexibility, improve resiliency, and increase water supply reliability.

As a starting point for the Delta Plan, four core water strategies must be implemented throughout the state to achieve the coequal goal of providing a more reliable water supply for California:

1. Increase water conservation and expand local and regional supplies
2. Improve groundwater management
3. Improve conveyance and expand storage
4. Improve water management information

These core strategies form the basis of the two policies and 19 recommendations found at the end of the chapter.
